Early Mathematics with Everyday Objects

Mathematics starts with curiosity

Early mathematics grows through noticing quantities, sorting objects, comparing sizes and recognising patterns. Everyday routines provide many opportunities to explore these ideas.

Count and compare

Count cups at the table, group toys by colour, compare two collections of objects or look for shapes around the home. Encourage children to explain what they notice.

Ask questions that invite thinking

Try prompts such as “Which group has more?”, “What comes next?” or “How do you know?” Give your child time to answer and explore with real objects.

Build on classroom learning

Use the concepts shared by the teacher as a starting point. Nursery explores early number ideas, Kindergarten develops counting and patterns, and Grade 1 extends mathematical reasoning and practice.
